1883 Mission in Every Street 1897 Church built - named St.Joseph 1960 Totally destroyed by fire on 31.Mar.1960 1964 New Church of St.Joseph opened by Bishop of Salford in Dec.1964. The building was of modern construction made of reinforced concrete with slate, stone & mosaic costing £80,000 1992 The new building declared unsafe due to "concrete cancer" and congregation given two weeks to vacate the building 1992 The parishes of St.Joseph and St.George are amalgamated and the new parish called St.John Southworth (honouring a Lancashire martyr) as from 29th February. The Bishop of Salford conducted a service of thanksgiving at a last Mass on Thursday 27th February. Some services could be held in a Chapel, created in the adjoining hall, the Samlesbury Chapel 2002 Abandoned building still awaiting total demolition, (now in the Whitefield clearance area) see 'Nelson & District Illustrated History (from Roman Times till 1922)' by Rev.Robert Smith (Parish Priest of St.Joseph's Church for 26 years) and 'Souvenir of the Golden Jubilee of the opening of he church 1897-1947' by St.Joseph's Church (1947) also 'St.Joseph's Nelson, 1883-1983' by W H Morgan (1983) see Nelson Library newspaper Index |
