NELSON ~ Nelson is approximately the area known as Great Marsden but also includes a small area of Little Marsden around the Church of St.Paul, Little Marsden.  Formerly in the Chapelry of Colne.

  1964 New Church of St.Joseph opened by Bishop of Salford in Dec.1964. The building was of modern construction made of reinforced concrete with slate, stone & mosaic costing £80,000
  1992 The new building declared unsafe due to "concrete cancer" and congregation given two weeks to vacate the building
  1992 The parishes of St.Joseph and St.George are amalgamated and the new parish called St.John Southworth (honouring a Lancashire martyr) as from 29th February. The Bishop of Salford conducted a service of thanksgiving at a last Mass on Thursday 27th February. Some services could be held in a Chapel, created in the adjoining hall, the Samlesbury Chapel
